New Wetland Sites in County Cavan

A revised map of wetlands (both known and potential wetland sites) in County Cavan has been compiled based on wetland sites reported in published sources, and previously unknown sites located through an aerial photographic analysis combined with sub soils data.

This project undertaken by Wetland Surveys Ireland has located 694 wetland sites in the county. Prior to this research project only 78 wetland sites had been recognised from published sources within the county.

The majority of the sites have little associated information on the wetland habitats that are likely to occur on the areas identified. A full county wetland survey, to build on the Cavan Wetland survey undertaken in 2008 is required to address this information deficit.

The Wetland Map of Ireland now displays a total of 6,150 sites nationally.
