Enhancement works well underway at Reenagross

In 2010 Wetland Surveys Ireland carried out a survey of Reenagross park and developed a biodiversity conservation plan on behalf of Kenmare Tidy Towns Association. Among the measures recommended in the plan were:

• the control of invasive species including Rhododendron and Japanese Knotweed

• upgrading of paths and bridges within the site to improve visitor access

• installation of interpretative facilities

It’s great to report that the eradication of Rhododendron and Japanese Knotweed undertaken in 2011 has been followed up in 2012 with excellent results.

A new bridge has been constructed and paths have been improved at the eastern end of the site.

Events aimed at increasing awareness of the interest of the site have taken place including a bat walk led by renowned bat expert, Mr Conor Kelleher and a nature walk during the Kenmare walking festival.

An archaeological study of a raised circular landform within the site has also commenced. Let’s hope that further improvement works will continue with planting of native trees to enhance the woodland planned for 2013. The above works have been carried out with the financial support of Kerry County Council and the Rural Development (LEADER) Programme and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, administered by the South Kerry Development Partnership Limited.
