Wetland field surveys in Longford

During the last week surveys of wetland sites in County Longford were completed by the Wetland Surveys Ireland team of Patrick Crushell and Joe O’Sullivan.

A range of wetland types, from transition mire and quaking bog, tall herb swamp, cutover bog some with areas of regenerating bog, wet woodland and bog woodland sites were located. An unusual find on one of the bog sites was the carnivorous Sarracenia purpurea, or northern pitcher plant an alien species introduced to Ireland in the late 19th century.

Results of the survey will be available later in the year from Máiréad Ní Chonghaile, Heritage Officer, Longford County Council.
